Day 19: Dorothy's Trip
We’ve come to our last day In Malawi and our MoonCatcher work here is drawing to a close. Yesterday we drove back from Mzuzu to Olipa’s house and packed up to leave. Below are a few of my last photos: some amazing mushrooms that we bought on our way home from Mzuzu, a wood delivery vehicle, and Olipa in her beautiful garden.
Today Phoebe flies home to Uganda, Claire to Albany, New York and I’ll meet up with my dear friend Jani in Tanzania where we will visit her daughter and meet her granddaughter for the first time.
This trip has been packed with experiences both delightful and challenging, but we’ve accomplished a lot and have plenty of work to do when we get home. I am so grateful for the help I’ve had, the old friends I’ve seen and the new friends we’ve made. A big thank you to everyone.
Saying goodbye to Phoebe at the airport.
I’ve been wanting to write something else. I want to write about Dorothy.
A few days before leaving home I facilitated a MoonBee at the Amsterdam Public Library. That place is gorgeous and one of the many libraries that Andrew Carnegie built across the US.
Colleen, the woman who was cutting fleece for us, asked me questions about Africa and told me that growing up her mother had African decor in the house and always dreamed of going there one day. I soon found out that her mother had died without ever realizing her dream. For some reason I immediately said, “I’ll take her with me”. I was given a photo of Dorothy Mae Harris and when I got home I slipped it into my backpack. I’ve looked at it most of the days I’ve been here and have quietly asked for her assistance as I made this trip. She’ll continue on to Tanzania with me. Thank you Dorothy.
I’ve heard from many people that they have been following along with me via this blog. It means the world to me to know that The MoonCatcher Project has this support. When I write, I think about who may read this and have tried to give you a taste of our progress. Serving the girl child of Africa continues to be a privilege and pleasure. Thank you for being part of this adventure.
