Day 12: Jinja
We spent the night at The Nile Hotel so once again sat near the mango tree having our breakfast. Ugandans eat chips (potato wedges like french fries), posho (or ugali which is much like polenta), matoke (steamed banana but not the sweet kind…it’s more like a plantain), sometimes steamed greens, and sweet toast with jam. Sometimes there are omelets with veggies and once we had small pancakes but no maple syrup here as there are no maple trees. I had mine with jam and that worked just fine.
We left to meet Tabitha around 9:00 and found her with 210 MoonCatcher kits on the corner of her road near her house. We were reluctant to drive to her house because the last time we tried, the roads were treacherous. Ends up, the roads were “sort of” fixed so it would have been just fine.
We went to Wanyange Seed Secondary School, not far from Tabitha’s home. It was fun to work with my old friend Tabitha again. I’ve known her since 2015 when I first came to Uganda. She has sewn and taught for us for years.
Tabitha started off the class and eventually Phoebe and I joined in. A young girl named Patience volunteered to try on the kit. What a bold girl. She was the only one in that group of over 200 that raised her hand. She was even willing to stand on a desk in the front row so that everyone could see her.
Tabitha suggested that the girls write their questions on paper and hand them to us to answer. We got about 20 of them and proceeded to have some good conversation based on what was written. It gave the girls an opportunity to ask their questions anonymously. I have those scraps of paper and will bring them home with me.
Once the class was over we went back to Tabitha’s house now that we knew the car could manage the road and had a lovely lunch and visit before we left for the long ride to Wakiso. On the way we met up with one of Phoebe’s brothers for a very short, but sweet, visit standing outside near the car. I was delighted to meet him.
We missed a lot of the traffic but there is no way to miss it all these days. We stopped for dinner and got home around 8:30.
Time for a shower and bed.
