Day 10: Farewell to Kenya

There’s not much to write about today. We were mostly in the car traveling from Kenya to Palissa. It was sad to say goodbye to Bella, Jacky, Beatrice, little Ellie and all our other friends in Kenya. Agnes will be back in the states soon, so I’ll see her there.

Bella has the Kenyan MoonCatcher Project working like a well-oiled machine. She, Jacky and two other tailors meet for a week each month to make our kits and they are absolutely beautiful. Bella and Jacky then share the teaching at school visits set up by Bella. They are getting better and better at this too. Flora, a teacher in training will help with this part and will travel to Uganda to do more training with Phoebe next month.

A long stretch of the road (50+ kilometers) to Palissa had speed bumps every 7 meters. I tend toward motion sickness on most tirps, but this had all of us hoping we could keep our breakfasts down. We made it to Palissa eventually and found the public library where we met Stella and Samson.

Stella is the head librarian and Samson runs the computer room at the library. Stella is going to start teaching the MoonCatcher curriculum for us. Phoebe will send completed MoonCatcher Kits to her, and Stella will communicate with schools and give instruction. Samson has volunteered to take photos.

Tomorrow we’ll meet with 200+ girls outside, under the shade trees. I just heard that the weather at home was snowy, cold and windy. Here it has been pretty steamy, so we’ll start early in the morning when the sun isn’t too harsh.

We’re staying in an adorable little guest house with rooms named after animals. I’m in Chimpanzee, Phoebe is in Crocodile and Zak in Leopard. This feels like a nice African touch.

We walked down the street and around the corner to get dinner and will go back to the same place for breakfast tomorrow. There are tables outside so we’ll have hot tea with spices on the patio before starting our work.
